Pediatric physiotherapy aims to support the motor development of infants, toddlers, and children when a difficulty, injury, or specific condition affects their ability to move, play, or participate in their daily activities.

At Ekinox, our approach is adapted to each child’s age and needs, in a reassuring environment where play and fun are central.

Physiotherapy tailored to children

Our pediatric physiotherapy service is currently available for children aged 0 to 3 years old who have motor difficulties or developmental delays. The goal is to support their motor development, encourage the acquisition of new skills, and help them reach their full potential.

Each treatment plan is personalized according to the child’s age, abilities, and individual needs, while actively involving parents throughout the rehabilitation process.

When should your child see a pediatric physiotherapist?

A pediatric physiotherapy assessment may be recommended if your child has:

  • Motor development delays
  • Challenges with fine or gross motor skills
  • Altered muscle tone (a baby who seems unusually floppy or stiff)
  • Musculoskeletal conditions
  • Development concerns related to prematurity
  • Sensory or cognitive challenges that affect movement
  • A brachial plexus injury
  • Congenital torticollis or plagiocephaly (For these conditions, we currently recommend starting with an assessment in pediatric osteopathy. If needed, our osteopaths may then refer your child to our pediatric physiotherapist if a motor developmental concern is identified or if additional physiotherapy follow-up is recommended.

What happens during a pediatric physiotherapy appointment?

Before your child’s first appointment, you will receive a detailed questionnaire about their medical history and developmental milestones. This information helps the physiotherapist better understand your child’s needs and prepare for the assessment.

During the appointment, the physiotherapist performs a comprehensive evaluation of your child’s motor development, posture, mobility, strength, and functional abilities.

Depending on your child’s age, the assessment may include play-based activities and age-appropriate, standardized exercises to observe movement in a natural, comfortable environment.

Following the assessment, the physiotherapist will develop a personalized treatment plan and provide recommendations and home exercises, when appropriate, to support your child’s progress between appointments.

A play-based approach

Play is at the heart of pediatric physiotherapy.

By incorporating engaging, age-appropriate activities, the physiotherapist helps children develop their physical abilities while creating a positive and enjoyable experience tailored to their stage of development.

This approach encourages active participation, builds confidence, and supports the achievement of therapy goals in a fun and natural way.

  • At what age can my child see a pediatric physiotherapist?

Our pediatric physiotherapy service is currently available for children aged 0 to 3 years old. The earlier a concern is identified, the sooner appropriate interventions can be implemented to support your child’s motor development and encourage the acquisition of new skills.
  • Does my child need a medical referral?

No. A medical referral is not required to book an appointment for pediatric physiotherapy. However, some insurance providers may require one for reimbursement. We recommend checking your coverage details with your insurance provider before your appointment.
  • What should I bring to my child’s appointment?

We recommend dressing your child in comfortable clothing that allows them to move and play freely during the assessment. For infants, we also suggest bringing a blanket, a favorite toy, or another familiar comfort item to help them feel at ease. Since part of the assessment is often conducted through play and age-appropriate activities, we encourage you to allow enough time for your child to become comfortable and fully participate in the session.

  1. Supporting healthy motor development

Early intervention can help your child develop age-appropriate motor skills, build confidence in their movements, and reach important developmental milestones.

As a general guideline, a developmental delay may be suspected if your child:

    – Is unable to lift their head while lying on their tummy by 3 months
Is not rolling over by 7 months
Is not sitting independently by 8 months
    – Is not walking by 18 months
    –
Is not jumping by 2 years old

If you notice any of these signs or have concerns about your child’s motor development, a pediatric physiotherapy assessment may be recommended.

  2. Encouraging participation in everyday activities

Our goal is to help your child play, move, learn, and fully participate in everyday activities according to their age and abilities.

  3. Supporting parents

Parents play an essential role in their child’s development. That’s why we provide personalized guidance, home exercises, and practical strategies to help support your child’s progress between appointments.
